Grow blueberries from seeds

If you wish to grow blueberries from seeds, first you have to find a reliable seeds supplier, because some low quality seeds won’t germinate. Once you find the supplier, you may ask him whether the seeds are cold stratified or not. If they are cold stratified already, it is easier for you to plant the seeds, if not, here I will tell you how to do the cold stratification.

If your blueberry seeds are not cold stratified, all you have to do is to fill some garden soil in a zip lock plastic bag and put the seeds evenly within the soil inside the plastic bag. Then put the plastic bag inside your refrigerator for about 8 weeks. That’s it. Now you have cold stratified blueberry seeds.

Once you have cold stratified blueberry seeds, you have to get ready for plant them in soil for the germination, for this I prefer to use peat moss. The reason for why I prefer peat moss is blueberries are acid loving plants and they grow best with the acidic soil within 4-5 PH level. Peat moss provides all acidic background for blueberries to germinate faster.

Make your growing beds filled with peat moss and spread the blueberry seeds evenly on the surface of the peat moss and then little bit mix the peat moss with the seeds so seeds have some peat moss cover over them. Remember not to bury the seeds too much. After this process you must water the growing bed and keep the moisture levels good until the blueberry seeds germinate.

Blueberries are not quick growing plants, they might take one to three months for the germination process and once they are germinated, you can take them out and plant in separate larger pots. At this point you must remember to make the grow medium acidic as I said above. Don’t use only peat moss, just use soil and some sort of acidic manure with peat moss for your growing pot because peat moss alone will not do the job at this point.

Other than planting in large pots, you may consider plant them in your garden soil. But planting them in pots will give you control to keep the acid level of the soil, So if you just growing several blueberry plants, I recommend to use large pots. Once you finished all the process I mentioned, you just have to nurture the plant and wait for about 2 years and the plants will produce delicious ripeblueberry for you.
