Grow blueberries in tropical conditions

Blueberries are native to North America. So many people think it is difficult to grow blueberries in tropical weather. But there are some ways that we can grow blueberries in tropical weather. First of all I will tell you how to choose most suitable blueberries for the tropical weather conditions. There are mainly two Blueberry varieties available. One is Northern Blueberry and the other one is Southern Blueberry. If you wish to grow blueberries in tropical climate you have to choose Southern Blueberry varieties. These southern Blueberry varieties require very small amount of chill hours. So it is actually possible to grow this type of Southern Blueberry varieties in tropical climate.

Now lets see how to make the soil which will be most suitable for the blueberries. Blueberries need acidic soil, that means it requires soil with PH 4.5 to 5.5. and also don't forget to add lot of organic matter to the pot where are you grow blueberries. Don't forget you can grow blueberries in large pots. I recommend to grow blueberries in large pots because there you can control the quality of the soil very easily. Once you get the Blueberry seeds, you have to put them in a freezer below 5 Celsius degrees for about 2 weeks. Now the seeds are ready for germination. Place them in your court and water it to keep the moisture. After about month or two, the seeds will germinate and will have small blueberry plants. Now you can transfer the small Blueberry bushes to large pots and provide what they need to grow.
Don't forget to keep the soil pH level between 4.5 to 5.5. and also don't let the bush produce fruits during first 2 years. When the bush has flowers, remove them during first 2 years. This will give the bush more energy to grow faster and stronger, which will make Higher yields after 2 years. If you haven’t enough space to grow normal blueberry bushes, you can also buy bonsai blueberry bushes, so you won’t need much space.
Other than all the information above, you also have to remember blue berries need good sunlight to produce fruits and they also need friends. That means you have to keep at least few blueberry bushes together to get good quality fruits from them. As many of us already know, it will take time for you to get fruits. if you plant it from the seeds, so if it is possible, try to get blueberry branches and grow them. I reccomend to buy them from a reputed seller, you can also find some reputable sellers in ebay and amazon.

Grow blueberries from seeds

If you wish to grow blueberries from seeds, first you have to find a reliable seeds supplier, because some low quality seeds won’t germinate. Once you find the supplier, you may ask him whether the seeds are cold stratified or not. If they are cold stratified already, it is easier for you to plant the seeds, if not, here I will tell you how to do the cold stratification. If your blueberry seeds are not cold stratified, all you have to do is to fill some garden soil in a zip lock plastic bag and put the seeds evenly within the soil inside the plastic bag. Then put the plastic bag inside your refrigerator for about 8 weeks. That’s it. Now you have cold stratified blueberry seeds. Once you have cold stratified blueberry seeds, you have to get ready for plant them in soil for the germination, for this I prefer to use peat moss. The reason for why I prefer peat moss is blueberries are acid loving plants and they grow best with the acidic soil within 4-5 PH level. Peat moss pr...
